London AI Jobs in 2026: 173 Open Roles and the Hiring Story Nobody Is Tracking

The AI hiring conversation defaults to San Francisco. OpenAI, Anthropic, the top-decile compensation packages that make the rounds on tech Twitter. It’s a reasonable default if your entire model of AI jobs is frontier labs building foundation models.

HireIndex’s data tells a different story. In our index of 1,789 open AI/ML roles across 748 companies — week of May 18, 2026 — London is the largest AI/ML hiring market in the world. Not by a rounding error. London’s 173 open roles outpace San Francisco’s 129 by 34%, and outpace New York’s 127 by 36%.

Most candidates applying for AI jobs in 2026 have not adjusted their search to reflect this.

How many AI jobs are open in London right now?

173 in HireIndex’s most recent index. Here’s the full global ranking:

San Francisco129
New York127

London’s lead is structural, not seasonal. The 173 roles span financial services, enterprise software, consumer tech, and AI-native companies — a distribution that insulates the market from any single company’s hiring cycle. When OpenAI pauses a team, San Francisco’s numbers drop visibly. London doesn’t have that exposure.

Which companies are posting the most AI/ML roles in London?

The employer list is not what most AI candidates have bookmarked:

Below that: a dense long tail. Financial services firms — HSBC, Barclays, and their technology subsidiaries — building production ML systems for risk modeling, compliance automation, and trading signal generation. Consulting firms — Accenture, Deloitte, Capgemini — staffing AI practices serving enterprise clients across regulated UK industries. A cluster of AI-native startups that have chosen London over Silicon Valley as their European headquarters.

The top employer by open role count holds 11 positions. That’s the number that explains everything else.

Is London’s market as concentrated as San Francisco’s?

No — and the difference is significant for anyone running a job search.

In San Francisco, OpenAI alone accounts for 65 of the city’s 129 open AI/ML roles — exactly 50.4%. Strip OpenAI out and San Francisco’s AI market is 64 roles, roughly the size of a mid-tier city. The market candidates perceive as the world’s deepest is, in practice, a single hiring pipeline with a secondary option set.

London has no equivalent concentration. Its top employer holds 6% of the local market, not 50%. That translates directly to candidate leverage: if you’re rejected by one London employer, the market doesn’t close. Multiple viable paths exist across sectors that don’t share headcount decisions or interview timing.

The sectors driving London’s diversification:

Financial services is the largest driver. The UK’s position as a global financial center means banks and asset managers are building production ML at a scale that few US tech companies match outside a handful of Tier 1 firms. These aren’t AI safety research roles or pre-product experiments — they’re revenue-critical systems processing live transactions, with engineering headcount budgets attached.

Enterprise AI is the second layer. Writer (8 London roles) builds AI writing infrastructure for regulated industries where UK regulatory compliance requires London-based engineering. Palantir’s UK public sector practice has grown into one of the company’s most active hiring markets. These roles often don’t appear in the same conversations as frontier lab jobs, but they exist at higher volume and lower rejection rates.

Consumer tech adds a third lane. Spotify’s 11 London roles span Machine Learning Engineer and applied research functions that operate independently of their Stockholm headquarters. Reddit and other US consumer tech companies have built London engineering hubs that handle EU market requirements — and those hubs need ML talent.

AI-native startups round out the market. Cohere (3 London roles), Mistral’s UK presence, and a cluster of smaller European AI companies have made London their operational base, creating hiring pipelines that don’t exist at the same density anywhere else in Europe.

What role types dominate London’s AI market?

London tracks the overall index distribution but skews toward applied Machine Learning Engineer and Data Scientist categories — both driven by financial services demand. Banks hire ML engineers to build production models; they don’t typically hire AI Research Scientists to advance frontier capabilities. The London market is more applied than academic, more production-focused than publication-focused.

Seniority distribution is also noticeably different from the index average. Financial services and consulting employers don’t run junior pipelines at scale — they hire experienced engineers into live systems, often mid-level and above. Entry-level roles in London exist but represent a smaller fraction of the market than in a city like New York or Toronto, where earlier-stage companies create more structured new-grad pathways.

Remote expectations in London also diverge from US norms. Most postings specify hybrid schedules with meaningful in-office requirements, at rates higher than equivalent US roles. Regulated financial services environments require on-site presence in ways that a US startup remote policy doesn’t. Candidates expecting full flexibility should check posting terms carefully before committing to a London-targeted search.

Does London’s AI market make sense for non-UK candidates?

The practical constraints are real. Most London roles require existing UK right-to-work authorization — the post-Brexit sponsorship route has improved but represents a minority of available positions. Companies with demonstrated sponsorship pipelines (Spotify, Cohere, Writer, and some financial services firms) exist, but the process adds friction and timelines that smaller employers won’t absorb for individual hires.

For engineers already based in the UK: 173 roles across genuine sector diversification means more live options than the widely-cited San Francisco market has once you subtract its single dominant employer. That’s the actual comparative picture. London doesn’t need to be sold on AI credentials it doesn’t have — the hiring data is straightforward.

For US-based engineers considering relocation: compensation differs. Senior-band London AI roles run approximately £120,000–£250,000, which converts favorably against US mid-market total compensation but trails top-of-band RSU packages at frontier US labs. The argument for London isn’t compensation maximization — it’s access to a market with six distinct demand drivers, none of which can shut down your job search by pausing a single team.
